Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez has announced that the parish's recreation department will hold the annual Punt, Pass and Kick Competition on Saturday, Aug. 24 at the South Louisiana Fairgrounds. The event will start at 10 a.m.

The South Louisiana Fairgrounds park is located on the eastern side of Donaldsonville and accessible by Church Street or Thibaut Street.

Punt, Pass and Kick, sponsored by the National Football League and USA Football, began in 1961 and offers separate competitions for boys and girls ages 6 to 15. The event is free. Organizers said cleats are not allowed.

Contestants may sign up online at nflppk.com or by calling Ascension Parish Recreation Program Coordinator Ajia Mitchell at 225-473-3898.

During the competition, officials will measure one pass, punt and kick for distance and accuracy. Scores are determined from where a contestant's ball first makes contact with the ground. For example, if a contestant passes their ball 100 feet, but the ball is wide of the measuring tape by 20 feet, their final score for passing would be 80. A participant's final score will be the total of the three events.

Winners in each age group will move on to compete in sectional qualifying competitions for a chance to move up to the national finals competition. At the national finals competition, contestants from each age group will be sponsored by one of the NFL's 32 teams.

The finalists will be announced during a commercial break of one of the NFL playoff games in January.
