Ascension 4H Shooting Sports Team competes in regionals
On April 25 – 28, the Ascension Parish 4 H Shooting Sports Team traveled to Lake Charles to compete in The 4H Southern Regional Competition. They had 29 shooters participate this year. It was a long four days but after all the shooting was done and all the scores were turned in, the Ascension team ended up with 18 members qualifying for the state match, some in multiple disciplines.
In Junior Air Pistol Basic Supported Class, first-year competitor Jamie Lavergne finished in 11th place to make her way to the state match.
Senior shooter David Janis competed in the .22 Pistol National Event again this year and won first place in the slow fire competition, third place in the Camp Perry Round and tied for fourth place in the Silhouette Match. This gave David a second-place overall finish to qualify him for the state match.
The Senior .22 Rifle has a couple of different classes for the shooters to compete in. Brendon Raffray competed in the National Event, which is composed of CMP, NRA 3 P and Silhouettes. After two long days of competition, Brendon finished in 10th Place to qualify for the state match.
Landon Woods competed in the Senior CMP Match. This is his first year competing in this event, and he smoked the other competitors winning first place to qualify him for the state match also.
In Junior .22 Rifle, the Ascension Team had three shooters qualify for the state match. Cameron Braud finished in fifth place, Noah Stafford in ninth and Austin Arceneaux in eleventh.
The Senior Shotgun Event turned into two long days with a little rain coming in on Sunday morning. There were three events the shooters competed in which were Sporting Clays, Trap and Skeet. Anthony Picou shot 106/150 to make it to the State Match for the second time in as many years.
In the Junior Shotgun Modified Trap Event, Ascension had three members qualify for state. Cameron Braud shot 45/50, Noah Stafford 43/50 and new member Trever Landry also shot 43/50. The Modified Trap team also did very well finishing in seventh place out of 21 teams. The team consisted of: Cameron Braud, Noah Stafford, Matthew Abshire and Carter Causey.
The Junior Archery Compound Bow Class had three of our members qualifying for state this year. Lauren Wall finished in third place, new member Sean Turner in eighth and Jacee Campo in eleventh place.
Laci Trujillo competed in the Junior Bare bow class, and she also qualified for the state match. The Junior Archery Bare Bow Team, which consisted of Jackson Babineaux, Laci Trujillo, Austin Saizon and Tyler Saizon finished in third place at the regional match. In the Junior Genesis Bow Class, first-year shooter Paige Ellis finished in seventh place to punch her ticket into the state match.
In the Senior Archery Modified Fita Event, Hunter Lambert was the only one competing this year. As soon as he finished, he had to go back to the shotgun range to finish up his second day of shooting. He didn't know that he qualified for the state match until the scores were emailed out a couple of days later.
Two shooters competed in the Senior Archery National Event this year, which is probably the most difficult of all the events.
Joseph Babineaux competed in the national event last year in the Compound Bow Class and went to nationals, competed in the Sighted Recurve Class this year. Joseph won first place in the 3D Archery Event, fourth place in the Field Event and a fourth-place in the Fita Event. With all these scores combined, it gave him a overall first-place finish to qualify him for the state match.
Anthony Picou competed in the Compound Bow Class this year. Anthony had a first-place in the Field Event, a third-place in the Fita Event and he tied for ninth in the 3D event for an overall third-place finish to qualify him for the state match.
Ascension had three members competing in the Junior Air Rifle this year. First-year shooter Matthew Abshire finished in second place, Cameron Braud in fifth and Justin Schexnaydre in twelfth to qualify all of them for the state match. The Louisiana State 4H Match will be held in Lake Charles on May 23-26.
