Parish wrestling teams earn top-10 finishes

All three of Ascension's heavyweights took part in the 47th Greater Baton Rouge City Wrestling tournament at Catholic High of Baton Rouge over the weekend.

East Ascension finished the tournament in ninth, while Dutchtown finished in the No. 6 spot. St. Amant had the best day, finishing second to champion Catholic. It was the second year in a row that the Bears have won the tournament.

The Gators had four wrestlers make it to the finals, and three of them took home city titles. These three winners were Clint Brownell, Sage Nugent and Jordan Averett.

Dutchtown was led by runner-up Brendan Warner, and East Ascension had two wrestlers earn second-place finishes in Landon Wheat and Jordan Campbell.

Parish finalists:

Catholic's Cameron Carpenter beat St. Amant's Brier Babin, 9-6, at 122.

Brusly's Austin Franklin beat East Ascension's Landon Wheat, 7-2, at 134.

Catholic's Davis Polito beat Dutchtown's Brendan Warner, 9-7, at 140.

Catholic's K.J. Wilson pinned East Ascension's Jordan Campbell (2:55) at 287.

Parish champions:

St. Amant's Clint Brownell pinned Catholic's Andrew Messina (1:10) at 154.

St. Amant's Sage Nugent beat Brusly's Richard Hunter, 11-9, at 172.

St. Amant's Jordan Averett beat Episcopal's Ellis Herring, 4-3, at 184.
