Gators win St. Amant Duals wrestling tournament

This past weekend was a great one for the St. Amant wresting team as they won the St. Amant Duals tournament in the Gold Dome for the first time since the event started back in 2002.
The Gators went undefeated throughout the event and earned first-place honors despite a huge field that included: Lafayette, Pearl River, Chalmette, McKinley, Episcopal, East Ascension, Dutchtown, Zachary, Live Oak, Dunham, Sulphur, St. Michael, Baton Rouge, North Vermillion and Hahnville.
In St. Amant's run for the top prize, they were able to post a dominating 71-12 victory over Chalmette followed by a near-perfect 72-7 win over East Jefferson.
From there, they cruised to a 59-15 victory over Lafayette and then overpowered St. Michael 66-15.
The Gators had their toughest battle against Hahnville. Each team won seven matches, but St. Amant was able to narrowly out-point them 33-31.
In the finals, St. Amant was able to put up a strong performance and out-dual runner-up Live Oak 48-25. Hanville finished in third.
The hard-fought victory saw many great individual performances by the Gators.
Josh Averett, Clint Brownell and Sage Nugent all went a perfect 6-0, and Justine Bowie went an unblemished 5-0.
Brownell had five falls in 4:29 to earn him the Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament. He was able to edge out Dutchtown's Brandon Cowell- who had five falls in 5:10.
Jesse Braud, Cameron Hyde, Jordan Averett and Jacob Gonzales all went 5-1 as Tyree Morris and Brier Babin both went 4-1.
Finally, Joseph Cagayao and Garrett Terrell both went 3-2.
There were also many Gators that stepped up in key situations and helped St. Amant earn the win.
One of these Gators included Tre Allert. He got a fall over Bailey Coker in just 34 seconds to give St. Amant a win in the 113-pound division in their victory over Lafayette.
