With the beginning of the school year, we finally get our first taste of prep sports since May.

Football may be getting much of the attention and hype, but volleyball is right around the corner as well.

Every year, Ascension fields some of the best volleyball teams in the parish. Last season, five of the six schools reached the playoffs. That same kind of success is expected in 2017.

Taylor Tidwell (St. Amant)

The senior two-sport star will begin her athletic year by trying to lead her St. Amant squad back to the Volleyball State Tournament in Kenner. The Lady Gators won the district tile and reached the state quarterfinals last season, despite persevering through the flood and the resulting relocation. Tidwell was named the district MVP as she collected 417 kills, 380 assists and 64 blocks. Tidwell is a versatile player that can do it all for the Lady Gators. She is an outside hitter, middle blocker and setter for her team.
