Local track performers qualify for state meet

The three Class 5A parish squads made the trip to Catholic High last week to compete in the Region-II track meet, hoping to qualify for this week’s state championships at LSU.

The best finishes came from Dutchtown as both the boys and the girls finished the day in fifth place.

In the boy’s meet, Zachary took home the region title, with Catholic finishing as the runner-up. Scotlandville, Denham Springs and Dutchtown rounded out the rest of the top five.

Dutchtown’s best individual performances came from Alec Snell and Noah Gray. Each performer came away with runner-up finishes.

Snell was runner-up in the 800 with a time of one minute and 57.90 seconds, while Gray placed second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.74.

Gray also finished in third in the 110 hurdles.

The Dutchtown 4x400 relay team was runner-up.

East Ascension landed just outside of the top 10 for the day. Their best individual performance came from Stanford Knockum as he placed third in the shot put with a measurement of 49 feet and six inches.

The 4x100 Spartan relay team placed third.

Finally, St. Amant finished at No. 17. Their lone top-three individual performance was earned by Dustin Boudlache in the discus with a measurement of 137 feet and five inches.

The Zachary girls also brought home the Region-II title. St. Joseph’s Academy was the runner-up, with Walker, Baton Rouge and Dutchtown rounding out the rest of the top five.

Leah Scott was dominant for the Lady Griffins.

In earning the meet’s title of Outstanding Field Performer, she won both the triple jump (39-7) and the long jump (18-6.75).

Jordan Brown placed second in the pole vault with a vault of an even 11 feet.

The St. Amant girls finished the day in 11th place.

Their top performer was Regan West. West won the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.39, and she placed third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.17.

All of these performers that qualified will now make the short trip to Baton Rouge on Saturday for the LHSAA Outdoor Track and Field State Meet at Bernie Moore Track Stadium at LSU.
