Dutchtown and EA earn top-10 finishes at state track meet
The Dutchtown Griffins and East Ascension Spartans both rode impressive showings at last weekend's LHSAA Indoor Track Meet at LSU to earn top-10 finishes.
East Ascension collected 13 points to land them at No. 10 in the competition, and Dutchtown--who finished second last year--accumulated 25 points to finish fifth.
Once again, Catholic was the big winner. They piled up 97 points to win their seventh straight indoor title. The closest anyone came at dethroning them was St. Paul with only 38 points. Zachary finished third, and Edna Karr finished fourth.
Dutchtown's Tyler Hughes finished third in the 55 hurdles with a time of 7.61 seconds. Catholic's Ken Ward won the event with a record time of 7.35.
The Griffins also finished third in the 4 x 200 relay with a time of one minute and 31.57 seconds. Karr won the event with a time of one minute and 29.45 seconds.
In the the field, Shelby Christy, the Griffins' football standout, finished third in both the long-jump and the triple-jump. For the long-jump, he finished with a jump of 21 feet and nine inches. The winner, Donald Gage of Zachary, jumped 23 feet and an inch.
For the triple-jump, Christy finished with 44 feet, one 1/4 inches. Central's Craig Jones won the event with a measurement of 44 feet, four 1/4 inches.
For East Ascension, Nick Brown finished second in the high-jump with six feet and five inches.
