Parish athletes make All-Metro teams
In Ascension Parish, football may get most of the headlines, but there are many athletes in the area that have excelled outside of those Friday night lights.
When the Baton Rouge area’s All-Metro swimming and cross-country teams were released, many of these athletes made the cut.
East Ascension was well represented on the All-Metro swimming squad.
For the boys, Spartan sophomore David Boylan made the first team. Boylan cashed in a strong performance at the Capital City Swim League Championships in Baton Rouge back in October as he finished third in the 100 backstroke.
For the girls, East Ascension sophomore Carley Foster also made the first team. She was able to finish third in the 200 individual medley at the championships.
When it came to the All-Metro cross-country teams, Ascension Catholic was the team that saw many of their runners make the list.
For the boys, senior Thomas Daigle was a first-team selection.
At the 2016 State Farm LHSAA Cross Country Championship meet at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches back in November, Daigle finished seventh with a time of 17 minutes and 3.77 seconds.
The Ascension Catholic boys finished as state runner-up.
As for the girl’s team, Ascension Catholic senior Sophie Daigle made the first team.
She finished as runner-up in Natchitoches with a time of 19 minutes and 24.48 seconds as the Lady Bulldogs brought home a state title. She also won the Warrior Run.
Three of her teammates were honorable mention selections on the All-Metro squad.
Senior Breanna Bernard was one of the selections. She finished third at the state meet with a time of 19 minutes and 48.12 seconds.
Joining her as an honorable mention performer was junior Stephanie Breaux. Breaux finished fourth in Natchitoches with a time of 20 minutes and 8.84 seconds.
The final Ascension Catholic All-Metro selection was freshman Haley Dupre. As an honorable mention selection, Dupre finished ninth at the state meet with a time of 20 minutes and 40.49 seconds.
Also making the All-Metro cross-country team was Dutchtown senior Tara Stuntz. Stuntz made the first team.
At the Class 5A state meet, she finished as runner-up with a time of 19 minutes and 12 seconds. Dutchtown finished the event in seventh place.
