Ascension softball teams open their seasons

The softball season has finally arrived and despite the bad weather last week, all but one of Ascension's softball squads were able to return to action.
The parish's top team, St. Amant, was forced to sit back and impatiently watch another week go by without a regular-season game.
The Lady Gators are district champs and coming off of a season where they made it to the state quarterfinals.
They were supposed to start the year off with a road clash at Walker but because of the poor weather, that game was cancelled.
This Thursday, they'll visit Lutcher and come Friday, they'll take part in the Coach I Memorial Tournament.
Dutchtown's opening week went well as they finished a perfect 4-0.
The Lady Griffins are trying to improve on an early first-round playoff exit from a year ago.
Last Tuesday, they started the season off with a dominating 12-0 victory over Lutcher. Their Wednesday game against Live Oak was postponed due to more rain.
But the Lady Griffins went back to action over the weekend as they traveled to Kaplan for a tournament.
Dutchtown crushed Catholic - N.I., 15-2, on Friday. To start Saturday off, they beat Kaplan, 9-5, and that evening, they blanked Berwick, 13-0.
The Lady Griffins will join St. Amant in the Coach I Memorial Tournament this weekend.
The East Ascension Lady Spartans come into this year with a lot of excitement as they bring back many starters from a team that reached the state quarterfinals a season ago.
They got off to a 3-0 start in their opening week.
After having their Thursday game against Hanville postponed, the Lady Spartans traveled to Denham Springs for a tournament over the weekend.
East Ascension opened the action with a 7-0 win over Ponchatoula on Friday night.
On Saturday morning, they squeaked by Central, 6-5, and that evening, they crushed Covington, 14-4.
On Thursday, East Ascension will host 3A powerhouse Brusly and for the weekend, they'll join St. Amant and Dutchtown in the Coach I Memorial Tournament.
The Ascension Christian Lady Lions fell to 0-2 to start their season.
Ascension Christian is trying to make the playoffs for the fourth straight season, but they'll have to do it with a young roster after losing many of last year's starters.
They got off to a bad start last week as they were beaten by Maurepas, 18-8, in the opener, and they were trounced by French Settlement, 13-3, last Thursday.
The Lady Lions will try to bounce back when they visit St. Michael on Thursday and during the weekend, they'll take part in a tournament at Doyle.
