Ascension Catholic headed to State Softball Tournament

While St. Amant and Dutchtown make their trips to Sulphur to compete in the 5A State Softball Tournament, Ascension Catholic will be right there with them in the 1A division.

The No. 7 Lady Bulldogs punched their ticket to Sulphur last Friday at home as they squeezed by No. 10 Merryville in a 1-0 duel dominated by pitching and defense.

It was certainly a much stiffer challenge than what they saw in the first round when they rolled past Delhi Charter 8-2.

The win improved Ascension Catholic to 22-6 for the entire season and put them just three victories away from a state title.

They'll now enter the quarterfinals for a meeting with No. 18 False River Academy on Friday.

The Lady Gators only finished the regular season 11-16, but their losing record was very deceptive. They played an absolute brutal non-district schedule that included games against 5A teams like: Lafayette, Fontainebleu, Walker, Central, Zachary, H.L. Bourgeois and Dutchtown.

They also played 3A teams like St. Charles, Parkview Baptist and a powerhouse that has won 28 straight games in Brusly.

In fact, False River only lost to 5A's No. 6 seed in Dutchtown 9-6 when they played back on March 5.

To get to their matchup with Ascension Catholic, the Lady Gators crushed No. 15 seed Montgomery 14-1 and upset second-seeded Mangham 10-6 in the second round.
