Top parish soccer stars make All-Metro team

The parish's soccer stars were recently given their much-deserved recognition once again as they were named to the Baton Rouge area's All-Metro teams.

For the boys, St. Amant had the most selections with two.

During the year, the Gators had the best record of the three 5A powers as they went 14-6-3 and headed into the playoffs as a No. 16 seed.

However, they were upset in the opening round by district rival Baton Rouge High, 3-2.

Their best player throughout the year was the three-sport standout Briggs Bourgeois. The sophomore forward scored 23 goals and dished out 16 assists this season.

He was an All-Metro first-teamer in addition to being named the district's MVP for the second straight year.

St. Amant also got a second-team All-Metro selection in freshman defender Hector Rodriguez--who was also a first-team all-district player.

Dutchtown was the only boy's team in the parish to reach the second round of the playoffs.

The Griffins went 12-9-2 during the regular season and earned a No. 20 seeding in the postseason. They upset West Monroe in the opening round before falling to Mandeville in regionals.

Dutchtown senior midfielder Jeremy Thompson made the All-Metro first team. Thompson scored six goals and dished out three assists during the year.

He was also a first-team all-district selection.

East Ascension failed to make the playoffs at 4-16-1, but junior forward Carter Marchand found his way onto the All-Metro second team. Marchand was also a first-team all-district selection.

As for the girls, East Ascension and Dutchtown each had three All-Metro selections while St. Amant had two.

East Ascension was the only girl's team to reach the second round of the playoffs this year.

They went 12-8-1 during the regular season and earned a No. 15 seed. They beat Lafayette in the opening round before losing to St. Scholastica in regionals.

Junior forward Blaire Laiche made the first team with her output of 19 goals and 23 assist throughout the season. Teammates Stephanie Bernal and Caroline LeCoq were second-team selections.

Laiche and LeCoq were first-team all-district selections while Bernal made the second team.

Dutchtown went 17-8-2 during the regular season and headed into the playoffs as a No. 16 seed before being upset in the opening round by Terrebonne.

Molly Litten and Sarah Patterson both made first-team All-Metro. Litten finished with seven goals and seven assists while Patterson scored 23 goals and dished out 16 assists.

Both players were first-team all-district selections with Patterson taking the district's Offensive MVP.

Madyson Bleakley made the All-Metro second team. She also made first-team all district.

St. Amant struggled throughout the regular season--finishing just 9-11, but they did make the playoff field. It was there that they lost to Dominican.

Midfielder Cameron Matherne made the All-Metro first team on the strength of eight goals and 15 assists. Lorelei Gaffney made the second team.

Both players were first-team all-district selections.
