The high-school football season will officially begin this Friday.

Teams from across the state with dreams of playing in the Superdome and hoisting up a state championship trophy will begin their long and laborious journeys to achieving their dreams.

Before the games are played, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association released their preseason prep football polls, and two Ascension Parish schools made the cut.

One of those schools was on the Class 5A poll. That schools was East Ascension.

The Spartans are coming off of a season where they finished the regular season on a three-game winning streak and then upset sixth-seeded Ruston in the opening round of the playoffs.

It is head coach Darnell Lee’s second season as head coach, and East Ascension returns all-district players like tackle Cameron Wire (LSU commit), running back Ralph Williams, receiver Shaivonn Robinson, linebacker Adrian Johnson and cornerback Jimel London.

In the preseason poll, East Ascension was ranked No. 17.

As for the 5A top five, John Cutis was ranked No. 1, followed by Evangel, West Monroe, Rummel and Acadiana.

The other parish school that found itself ranked in the LSWA preseason poll was Ascension Catholic of Class 1A.

The Bulldogs are entering their third season under head coach Drey Trosclair.

They had a terrific turnaround in 2016 as they went from 4-6 to 6-4, hosted a home playoff game and reached the state quarterfinals.

Ascension Catholic returns a plethora of all-district stars in 2017. This list includes: running backs Jamar Barber and Jai Williams, defensive lineman Dillion Davis, linebacker Bubba Gautreau and safety Mason Zeringue.

The Bulldogs were ranked No. 14 in the Class 1A preseason poll.

Haynesville ranked No. 1, followed by Kentwood, Logansport, Opelousas Catholic and Ouachita Christian.
