The wait is over. Football season is here.

Sure, the weekends will belong to LSU and the Saints, but for the next three months, Friday nights will belong to our high-school football stars.

This week, teams from across the state will play their jamboree games, and next week, the regular season will officially begin.

As always, there is ample excitement in Ascension Parish as the six high-schools prepare to open up action. The year will undoubtedly carry with it tremendous individual performances from its best players.

Cade Nelson (St. Amant)

Cade Nelson started the 2016 season backing up Mark Darby at running back, but when Darby went down with a season-ending knee injury, the Gators were looking to Nelson to pick up the slack. He did that and more. Nelson cashed in one of the best seasons in the area as he totaled more than 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns on his way to earning both first-team All-District 5-5A and All-Parish honors. With St. Amant breaking in a new starting quarterback in 2017, the Gators will be looking to Nelson to have another big year.
