Dutchtown basketball star signs with Nicholls
On Wednesday, joined by her family, teammates, coaches and friends and shedding tears of joy, Dutchtown basketball standout Chelsea Cain had what she described as "the best of day" of her life.
Playing college basketball has always been a dream for Cain, and now that dream is a reality. On Wednesday afternoon, she officially signed her letters of intent to join the Nicholls basketball program.
“It’s the best feeling in the world right now to know that I get to continue my basketball career at Nicholls. I’m just ready to play. I feel like it’s a great program for me to go to," Cain said.
As she signed, Cain took the time to thank all those that helped her achieve her goal. She said, “It wasn’t easy. I just want to thank all my family for being there for me.”
With a heavy heart, she also thanked her late grandmother. Getting emotional, Cain said, "She was my number one fan."
Cain has had a wonderful career at Dutchtown.
She became a starter during her sophomore campaign, and she wasted no time in proving to be one of the best players in the parish.
Cain helped lead her Lady Griffin squad to a 21-9 regular-season record and a playoff victory. In doing so, she was named both first-team All-District 5-5A and first-team All-Parish.
She continued her stellar play last season as a junior as she once again helped lead Dutchtown to the playoffs. And once again, she was a first-team all-district and All-Parish selection.
She has been one of the Weekly Citizen's Parish Basketball Players to Watch for the past two years.
Much of her success over these past three seasons can be attributed to Cain's ability to be a multi-dimensional player.
“I think my greatest strength is my versatility—my ability to do more than just one thing on the court," Cain said.
College programs felt the same way. Cain was offered by both Nicholls and McNeese State, but she felt Nicholls was the perfect landing spot.
She connected with the campus, the team and the program as a whole.
“It was the girls there," Cain said. "They really made me feel at home. They also have a great coaching staff. All of that really pulled me into going there.”
Cain will be a proud member of the Nicholls basketball team next season, but for now, she's looking forward to finishing out her career at Dutchtown.
The senior forward will be joined by two other returning first-team all-district players in guard Zaria Harleaux and forward May Babin.
They'll be looking to improve on an 18-13 campaign from last season.
In addition to leading her team to Marsh Madness in Alexandria, Cain has set a lofty goal for herself.
“I’m ecstatic about my senior year," Cain said. "My biggest personal goal this season is to try to push myself to making All-State. I’m looking forward to making that happen.”
