After three years of leading the East Ascension Spartans, Britt Waguespack has decided to step down as the program’s head baseball coach.

Though, Waguespack won’t be leaving the school any time soon. He will remain at East Ascension and continue to serve as an assistant coach on the football team.

Waguespack said that much of his decision to walk away as the Spartans’ skipper was about freeing up more time as he welcomes two new additions to his family.

“I’ve been involved in coaching now for 12 years, and right now, I have twins on the way, so it was a lot going on at one time,” Waguespack said. “I felt like it was best to step away and make more time for my family and more time to do some things that I always wanted to do outside of baseball. I’m also on the football coaching staff, so I just didn’t want to be so heavily-involved.”

Waguespack was the head coach at Riverside Academy for three years, before serving as an assistant under Mike Toups for three seasons at East Ascension.

When Toups abruptly resigned at the end of the 2014 season, Waguespack took the reins.

In three years as the head coach, the Spartans reached the playoffs all three years, but he regrets not being able to get the team past the first-round hurdle.

“In the three years, we were never able to get past the first round of the playoffs, so maybe the program needs a change. Maybe they need a fresh start and some new blood,” Waguespack said. “I’m sure they’ll hire a great candidate to lead the program. I enjoyed every second of my time there. “East Ascension’s a great school, and the kids were fantastic. They’re good kids; I never had to worry about them getting into any trouble off of the field. We had every avenue to win.”

Waguespack said that he’d like to be a head coach again in the future, but right now, he’s only focused on being a dad.

Head football coach and Athletic Director Darnell Lee said that the school supports Waguespack’s decision.

He went on to say that East Ascension will officially begin its search for a new head baseball coach next week, at the conclusion of the LHSAA playoffs.
