LAFAYETTE – Following a season-opening loss, St. Amant has bounced back in a big way by posting back-to-back wins in the last two weeks.

St. Amant (2-1) rolled to a 42-20 at Lafayette Friday night, powered by a furious rally in the second half.

Lafayette led 20-14 at halftime, and seemed to have momentum early in the third quarter when Trevin Wilson intercepted St. Amant quarterback Tyler Guillory at midfield.

The momentum swing went over to the Gators just three plays later. Lining up for third-and-short, Aaron Woods broke free on a long gain, but finished with a fumble to St. Amant.

Two plays later, the Gators took the lead on a 79-yard touchdown run by Trey Washington. The carry was part of a 134-yard performance for Washington, who scored three times in the game.

Lafayette coach Jay Domengeaux acknowledged that his team had the edge going into the second half of the game, but the turnover hurt after the Gators capitalized.

It was all St. Amant after the momentum swing early in the second half. Guillory led the Gators offense on a series of key plays to pull away from the Lions. Guillory opened the scoring in the first quarter when he broke free on a 69-yard touchdown carry. He also set up Washington’s first touchdown when he completed a 41-yard pass to Ryan Cardinale.

The Gators took a 28-20 lead following a 69-yard drive finished off with Alexis Jackson’s 2-yard touchdown run.

Lafayette gave up 249 rushing yards to St. Amant in the second half after holding them to 113 in the opening half.

Domengeaux credited the Gators for playing hard and finishing the game.

Tendrick Cooper and Washington scored fourth-quarter touchdowns to ice the game for the Gators. Washington scored his third touchdown when he broke away from 32 yards out after recovering a squib kick.

St. Amant returns to the Pit Friday night for this year’s homecoming game. The Gators will host Glen Oaks.
