East Ascension shuts out Tara
East Ascension gave new head coach Paul Bourgeois a victory in his first game at the helm of the Spartans.
The teams combined for eight turnovers in the game, but it was East Ascension that took the 14-0 win.
Spartans sophomore running back Sione Palelei scored on a 30-yard run with 11:15 remaining. He finished with 127 yards to help pace the home team. Four of his runs went for 30 yards or more.
Palelei had an apparent 95-yard run up the middle cut to a 60-yard gain due to an inadvertent whistle. The series ended in a fumble, which was one of three the Spartans lost.
East Ascension’s Jalon Watts and Darren Sharper both recovered fumbles. Watts’ set up the initial score. Sharper also had an interception late in the game. Tyrous Wilson also had an interception to set up a score.
Jarmarcus Jarvis, who finished with 70 yards on 11 caries, had runs of 19 and nine yards to set up quarterback
Adam Miller’s 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The extra point was blocked. Miller ran for 52 yards on 19 carries.
Tara’s best drive went inside the Spartan 10, but a fourth down was stopped short on a tackle by De’Andre Darville at the 3-yard line.
“Our defense stayed tough,” Bourgeois said. “It’s a win. We’re going to take it. Right now we’re 1-0.”
