Dutchtown’s Effrem Reed commits to ULL

Staff reports
Dutchtown star running back Effrem Reed committed to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette this week.

Dutchtown All-State running back Effrem Reed will continue his stellar football career with the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns.

Reed, who ran for nearly 2,000 yards and 32 touchdowns last season, committed to ULL coach Mark Hudspeth Sunday, following his second official visit.

At 5-foot-9, 185 pounds, Reed will play either running back or wide receiver for the Cajuns.

With a 3.0 GPA, he plans to major in kinesiology.

In the unprecedented 2010 season, Reed emerged as an offensive powerhouse in the Dutchtown backfield along with fellow senior Leon Blouin at quarterback. The duo helped the Griffins to a 10-0 regular season record and the District 6-5A title. Dutchtown drew the top seed in the Class 5A playoffs and won two postseason games.

As Reed will go west on Interstate 10 to Lafayette, Blouin will go east to New Orleans. Blouin committed to Tulane University over the summer.

Another area standout will sign with a state school next week. St. Amant kicking specialist Justin Manton, who also announced his commitment over the summer, will officially sign with the University of Louisiana-Monroe Wednesday afternoon at school.

Manton has been a three-sport standout during his career at St. Amant. He has shined in football, basketball and baseball for the Gators.
