Locals to appear in U.S. Army Red Stick Bowl

Several area stars will clash in the ninth U.S. Army Red Stick Bowl Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Parkview Baptist in Baton Rouge.

The teams have been practicing this week at BREC’s Independence Park in preparation for the game.

Players from St. Amant, Dutchtown and East Ascension will play for the Black Knights, while Donaldsonville and Ascension Catholic will be represented on the Rough Riders squad.

Donaldsonville head coch Terence Williams will lead the Rough Riders, along with fellow Tigers defensive coordinator Jay Dykes, offensive coach Barry Whittington and athletic trainer Quantrell Tovall.

Dykes’ brother, David Dykes of Live Oak, will be offensive coordinator. The brothers are the sons of former Donaldsonville coach Jimmy Dykes.

Three Donaldsonville players are on the roster:?defensive back Titus Howard, wide receiver Jarrett Cole and defensive lineman Robert Gibson.

Linebacker Parris Stewart represents Ascension Catholic.

Another Donaldsonville connection is White Castle defensive coordinator Dio Bernard, who will be an assistant for the Rough Riders. Bernard previously played and coached at Donaldsonville.

On the Black Knights side, St. Amant athletic trainer Scott Arceneaux will have several familiar faces on the sideline, including Gators defensive back Jaylin LeBlanc, outside linebacker Landon Henry, running back Daniel St. Pierre and punter/kicker Justin Manton.

Representing East Ascension will be offensive tackle Houston Veazey and inside linebacker Wade Julien.

Dutchtown players set to play are defensive back Johnathan Darville, offensive lineman Brandon Castjohn and defensive tackle Devante Jones.

Tickets for the game are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
