Top-seeded Dutchtown hosts No. 24 Westgate in quarterfinals

GEISMAR – Coming off a 38-26 win over Brother Martin Saturday night in New Orleans, Dutchtown will welcome Westgate in the quarterfinal round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Top-seeded Dutchtown (12-0) faces No. 24 Westgate (7-4), a team that has upset No. 9 Ponchatoula and No. 8 Higgins so far in the playoffs.

For the Griffins, it is only the second time in school history for a team to advance to the quarterfinal round.

“You don’t have teams every year that have great chemistry, but this team does. They deserve to be respected,”?Dutchtown head coach Benny Saia said.

In the quarterfinal, Dutchtown’s Effrem Reed led the way with 145 yards and three touchdowns.

Leon Blouin also surpassed the century mark, as he added 117 rushing yards. The quarterback also went 6-of-7 passing for 45 yards.

Dutchtown avoided turnovers and penalties to power the victory over Brother Martin (8-4).

The winner of the quarterfinal game will face either No. 4 West Monroe or No. 5 Jesuit in the semifinals. No. 3 St. Paul’s takes on No. 27 Acadiana, and No. 10 St. Augustine faces No. 2 St. Thomas More on the other side of the bracket.

The state championship game is set for Saturday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.
