Louisiana football names Vanderbilt cornerbacks coach LaMar Morgan defensive coordinator
Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football has announced replacements for three assistant coaches who followed Billy Napier to Florida.
LaMar Morgan will succeed defensive coordinator Patrick Toney, Matt Bergeron will replace running backs coach Jabbar Juluke and Bryant Ross will take the position previously held by assistant offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton.
Morgan, a former Cajuns defensive back in 2003 and from 2005-07, and a former UL cornerbacks coach under Napier from 2019-20, coached corners at Vanderbilt last season.
Morgan, who also coached defensive backs at Western Kentucky from 2014-15, at UL Monroe from 2016-17 and safeties at Houston in 2018, will also coach safeties when he returns to Lafayette.
Toney coached Cajuns safeties from 2018-20 and outside linebackers last season. Wes Neighbors was UL’s safeties coach last season and interim defensive coordinator for UL’s New Orleans Bowl win over Marshall. Neighbors remains on staff, a UL spokesman said Thursday night, but the position he will coach remains uncertain as defensive staff assignments are shuffled and finalized.
Bergeron has been a UL staffer since 2018 and spent the past two seasons as a tight ends analyst working under new Cajuns coach Michael Desormeaux, who was promoted from tight ends coach/co-offensive coordinator after Napier left for Florida.
Bergeron, who played quarterback at Lamar in 2012 and Southern Miss from 2013-14, was UL’s interim running backs coach for the New Orleans Bowl. He also was a quality control coach working with Arizona State receivers in 2017, when Napier was offensive coordinator there, and he spent a couple weeks as a staffer as Florida before returning to UL.
Ross was offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Grambling last season. The Alabama A&M product also coached the offensive line at Central Arkansas from 2014-16, was a graduate assistant working with Mississippi State’s offensive line in 2017 and worked as a staffer assisting with UL’s offensive line from 2018-20.
