Five things to know about the UL basketball team as it prepares for the 2020-21 season …

Joe Charles on board

Carencro High senior Joe Charles signed Wednesday with the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The 6-foot-8 forward who averaged 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in an injury-hampered season as a junior was UL’s lone signee of the day.

Charles committed after a sophomore season in which Carencro won the 2018 Class 4A State championship.

“Joe is a young man we identified early in the recruiting process and he made an early commitment to stay at home for college,” UL coach Bob Marlin said in a statement. “We love his versatility and how he impacts winning on both sides of the ball.”

Julien, Cadwell not ready

Neither starting forward Kobe Julien, who missed much of last season following knee surgery, nor juco-transfer guard Durey Cadwell, an ex-Buffalo signee who missed all of last season (knee), will be ready to start the season, Marlin told UL’s flagship radio station, KPEL 1420-AM.

Both recently underwent “clean-up” procedures and won’t be available until sometime in the new year, Marlin said and a team spokesman confirmed.

Julien, who redshirted in 2018-19 after sustaining a major knee injury at Madison Prep in Baton Rouge, was the Sun Belt Conference’s freshman leader in scoring (12.8 points per game) and rebounds (5.5 per game) through eight games before getting hurt again last season.

Cajuns picked second in poll

UL was picked Thursday to finish second in the Sun Belt’s West Division in a preseason poll of conference coaches.

Ahead of the Cajuns (106 points): defending 2019-20 SBC regular-season champion Little Rock (140).

Georgia State was picked to win the East.

UL on Wednesday signed Carencro High's Joe Charles, shown here shooting a free throw in a Feb. 2019 game against St. Thomas More.

Wilson, Russell make preseason teams

Guard Mylik Wilson, last season’s Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, was named to the SBC preseason second team and senior guard Cedric Russell, who averaged 14.4 ppg in 2019-20, was named to the third team this week.

Little Rock senior Ruot Monyyong, last season’s Defensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, was named preseason Player of the Year in a vote of conference coaches.

Also on the preseason first team: Little Rock point Markquis Nowell, Appalachian State’s Justin Forrest, Georgia State’s Kane Williams and Coastal Carolina’s DeVante Jones.

Five non-conference home games planned

The Cajuns have scheduled five non-conference home opponents: Xavier-Louisiana (Nov. 25), Loyola-New Orleans (Nov. 28), LSU-Alexandria (Dec. 8), Louisiana Tech (Dec. 12) and New Orleans (Dec. 15).

UL has only two non-conference home games – Dec. 2 at UNO and Dec. 18 at Virginia Commonwealth, the season’s only plane trip – before opening SBC play Jan. 1 at the Cajundome vs. Texas State.

Non-conference tip times are to-be-announced.
