What bowl game will Mississippi State football make? Here are the best projections

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State football's season will end with a bowl game for the 13th consecutive year, but fans shouldn't start booking flights or hotels quite yet.

Where the Bulldogs (6-4, 3-4 SEC) are headed is far from determined. Next week's Egg Bowl will likely play a big role as MSU — assuming a win Saturday (11 a.m., SEC Network+/ESPN+) vs. East Tennessee State (3-7) — will toe the line between seven and eight wins.

Last season's 7-5 offering led Mississippi State to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. An 8-4 season in 2018 led MSU to the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida.

WORK TO DO:Mississippi State football played Georgia better than it did Alabama, but the gap is still large

Rounding out the College Football Playoff will be a difficult task for the committee in the next three weeks. It makes the domino effect through bowl season impossible to predict.

College football experts have tried their best to nail it down. The consensus for where Mississippi State will spend late December? We'll see.

Here's what the latest bowl projections say.

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl: Jacksonville, Florida

Who said it: Brett McMurphy (Action Network) and Jerry Palm (CBS Sports)

Mississippi State hasn't been to the Gator Bowl since 2017. MSU beat Louisville 31-27 in that matchup.

The Gator Bowl is a possibility regardless of the Egg Bowl. Tennessee made it to Jacksonville in 2019 with seven wins. Texas A&M made it with eight wins the year before.

McMurphy projects MSU to face Clemson (9-1, 7-0 ACC). Palm projects Notre Dame (7-3), the lone team to beat Clemson, to be in Jacksonville.

TaxAct Texas Bowl: Houston

Who said it: Kyle Bonagura (ESPN)

Mississippi State has yet to participate in the Texas Bowl. Bonagura projects that to change with MSU facing Baylor (6-4, 4-3 Big 12).

LSU made the Texas Bowl with six wins last season. Texas A&M made it with seven wins in 2019. A win in the Egg Bowl could knock out MSU from Houston.

SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl: Las Vegas

Who said it: Mark Schlabach (ESPN)

The SEC will have a team in the Las Vegas Bowl for the first time since 2000. This would provide a rarity for MSU as the bowl game (Dec. 17) comes before early singing day (Dec. 21).

TransPerfect Music City Bowl: Nashville, Tennessee

Who said it: Richard Johnson (Sports Illustrated)

Mississippi State hasn't been to the Music City Bowl since 2019 when it lost to Louisville. Johnson projects MSU to face Maryland (6-4, 3-4 Big Ten).

Tennessee made the Music City Bowl with seven wins last season. MSU did so in 2019 with six wins.

ReliaQuest Bowl: Tampa, Florida

Who said it: Brad Crawford (247Sports)

Formerly known as the Outback Bowl, Mississippi State last played here in 2019 (2018 season) where it lost to Iowa. Crawford projects MSU to face Notre Dame.
