Boating safety course to be offered this weekend

Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 4-10 will teach a one-day course session of “About Boating Safety." The class will be at Cabela's on July 18.

There is no charge for taking the course, but the course book may be purchased for $25.

The topics covered will be: maintaining your boat, navigation rules, navigation lights, operating a boat safely, casting off and docking, anchoring, state and federal requirements, what to do in emergencies, enjoying water sports, filing a boat plan, fueling your boat, new state boating laws and many other topics.

  Louisiana now has a mandatory boating education law. All persons born after Jan. 1, 1984, must complete a boating education course and carry proof of completion to operate a motorboat in excess of 10 horsepower.
