Cabela’s in Gonzales is partnering with the Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for the second time this summer to hold a Kayak Fishing 101 Workshop on Saturday, Aug. 30.

The one-day workshop will walk beginners through all they need to know to begin their new pastime as a kayak angler, one of the fastest-growing outdoor recreations in the southeast region.

“Cabela’s is definitely paying attention to the growing interest and participation in the sport by our customers,” said Cabela’s Marketing Manager Melanie Boone. “It’s a great way to get outside on the water and spend an afternoon with the family. It’s also great exercise; you can catch a wide variety of fish and best of all, it’s inexpensive.”

Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club Secretary Todd Lewis had this to say: “Kayak fishing has grown tremendously in the past decade. In 2005, the Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club hosted Louisiana’s first kayak fishing tournament. Approximately 25 people participated.

"Last July, the 'Ride the Bull' tournament in Grand Isle spectators watched more than 420 participants launch from a single location to take part in the biggest single-day kayak-fishing tournament the nation has ever seen. With the nation’s second longest shoreline (not coastline), Louisiana is a paddler’s (or pedaler’s) dream. We have a gazillion places waiting to be explored and fished.”

The workshop will consist of approximately two hours of classroom instruction, reviewing the basics (including how to choose a kayak, gear, tackle/bait and accessories) needed to get started, followed by hands-on work stations in and around the Cabela’s pond. Stations will include: Launching and Landing, Proper Paddling Techniques, Casting/Catching/Landing Fish from a Kayak, Knot-Tying, Self-Rescue Instruction and more.

If you are interested in participating in the Kayak Fishing 101 Workshop, please contact Todd Lewis at The class will be limited to 35 participants; be sure to e-mail and reserve your spot. The June workshop filled up in less than two weeks.
