The St. Amant Lady Gators were able to make it to the second round of the playoffs on the heels of an improbable fourth-quarter comeback against defending state champion Lafayette last week.

However, they weren't able to work the same kind of magic two games in a row. They made the long journey to Shreveport to meet top-seeded Southwood and were absolutely demolished 72-26.

No. 16 St. Amant kicked the postseason off with a bang last Monday night as they hosted No. 17 Lafayette.

They were forced to play catchup for most of the game and found themselves down 11 in the fourth. But as unlikely as the comeback appeared, the Lady Gators finally started hitting shots and forced the defending champs to turn the ball over in bunches.

The result was an exciting 43-42 win that went down to the very last shot. The victory earned St. Amant their first playoff win in 12 years.

They didn't get to celebrate for very long. Their gift for such an accomplishment quickly turned into a curse as they had to make the long trip up north to Shreveport to play the No. 1 seed Southwood--a team that went 28-1 during the regular season.

Maybe the Lady Gators were sluggish from the long trip, maybe they were emotionally drained from the win against Lafayette, but they got out to the absolute worst start imaginable against the Cowgirls.

Southwood quickly justified their No. 1 ranking as they immediately crushed any hopes St. Amant had for an upset by jumping out to a 27-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The opening-quarter blitzkrieg put the game completely out of reach, and Southwood was able to cruise for the rest of the contest.

The Lady Gator offense continued to be stymied as they were only able to score five first-half points.

They finally began to hit shots once the third quarter began but by then, the game had already been long out of reach. Southwood was able to roll to the easy 72-26 win.

Kourtney Pennywell led the way for the Cowgirls with 16, Chelsea Tieuel had 13 and Jessy Ellis had 10.

The win improved Southwood to 30-1 overall and pushed them through to the quarterfinals where they'll meet No. 9 New Iberia.

As for St. Amant, the stats weren't so pretty. Katrina Ledoux was the only Lady Gator to be able to score in double-figures as she led with 11. Kara Gremillion had six. After sparking St. Amant to the first-round win with 16, Jordan Hartman was held to just four against the Cowgirls.

With the loss, the Lady Gators finished the season at 22-11.
