Lady Gators and Lady Spartans drop district matchups

It was a hard week for St. Amant and East Ascension.

The Lady Gators went from the possibility of winning a district title to losing three in a row, and the Lady Spartans didn't fair much better as they dropped back-to-back games.

St. Amant had hopes of claiming a district championship when they entered their mathcup with McKinley last week. But after a 61-41 loss, they were faced with a two-game losing streak instead.

They tried to rebound with a road win over St. Joseph to end the week, but they were dealt their third straight loss. This time, they could only produce 32 points as they fell 35-32 to their district foe.

The Lady Gators led the game 19-18 at the half but after being held to just eight points in the third, St. Joseph was able to take a 28-27 lead heading into the fourth.

With the lead, St. Joseph was able to do just enough to cling to the advantage and win by three.

In the loss, no Lady Gator scored in double-figures. Jordan Hartman led St. Amant with seven, and Kara Gremillion and Jaci Lavigne each had six.

With the defeat, St. Amant fell to 20-10 overall and 4-4 within the district.

East Ascension ended up on the wrong side of the win-column as well on Friday night.

They started the week with a 43-33 loss to St. Joseph, and they ended it by being dominated on the road by Woodlawn.

The game was never close. Woodlawn jumped out to a 16-4 lead after one, and they never let up--building a commanding 28-9 halftime advantage.

The two teams played each other to a draw in the second half, but that just meant that the Lady Panthers' 19-point lead remained intact as they cruised to the 49-30 win.

Jerrica Williams was East Ascension's leading scorer as she poured in 16, and Jaynice Aguillard helped out with eight of her own.

It was the Lady Spartans' second straight loss as they dropped to 13-11 overall and 4-5 in district play.

It didn't get any better on Monday night when they met St. Amant. In a meeting between two teams with consecutive losses, something had to give, and it did.

The Lady Gators finally got the elusive win by squeaking past East Ascension 45-39. As a result, the Spartans ended their season on a three-game losing streak.

Gremillion led St. Amant with 16, and Williams paved the way for the Lady Spartans with a game-high 17.
