East Ascension jumped out to an early double-digit lead, thanks to excellent outside shooting in the first half.

The Spartans went on to take a 65-62 win over Dutchtown Friday night.

East Ascension’s Tyler Wright, who finished with 14 points, scored eight of his points in the first quarter. Three-point shooting was the key for the Spartans, who made seven for the game (Wright added four of those).

Dutchtown, which entered the fourth quarter trailing 47-36, went on a 16-6 run to close East Ascension’s lead to one with under four minutes left. Dutchtown made the run, thanks to superior full-court defense and out-hustling East Ascension for second-chance points.

Dutchtown’s comeback was led by Terrance Cushenberry (who had 17 points). The game’s momentum changed with each shot for the final four minutes.

In the final minutes of the game, East Ascension’s Deaundre Smith (14 points) hit key shots to close the game out another Spartan victory.

The game ended the regular season for both squads. East Ascension finished with an overall record of 19-13 (4-6 in District 6-5A). Dutchtown, with the loss, dropped to 7-21 overall (1-9 in District 6-5A).

The seniors honored for the East Ascension were Curtis Watts, Tyler Wright, Chase Poche and Willie Williams.
