Dutchtown’s Hill wins wrestling state title as Griffins finish ninth

BOSSIER?CITY – Dutchtown led the way for local wrestling teams over the weekend in the state tournament at the CenturyTel Center.

No. 1 seed Zach Hill of the Griffins defeated No. 6 Christian Brower of Comeaux in the 285 pound group to win an individual title.

In division one, Dutchtown finished ninth with 98.5. The top three included Rummel, Jesuit and Catholic.

On his way to winning the title, Hill met East Ascension’s Graham Karwath. After pinning Karwath, Hill advanced to the final against Brower. Karwath finished fifth in 285.

In 215, St. Amant’s Brennan Howell topped East Ascension’s Valentino Arriola in the second round (Arriola had a bye in the first).

Dutchtown’s Trevor Settoon also faced Arriola in a consolation round. Settoon won, but was defeated in the next round.

In 189, Alex Medine of Dutchtown lost in the opening round, but notched a pair of wins in the consolation rounds.

In 171, Jeremy Huff of St. Amant and Hunter Waguespack of East Ascension each recorded first round wins. Joey McCaffery of Dutchown took two wins in the consolation rounds. Huff won two consolation rounds, while Waguespack took one.

In 160, St. Amant’s Leroy Johnson and East Ascension’s James Eskins stumbled in the opening round. Dutchtown’s Victor Mattaur claimed a win in the first match.

In 152, Dutchtown’s Brendan Meaut took a first round win. East Ascension’s Matt Chenevert and St. Amant’s Derek Forrester suffered losses in the opening round. Chenevert picked up two victories in the consolation rounds.

In 145, Mason Schexnaydre of Dutchtown and Thomas Turner of East Ascension won in the opening round. Ted Prudhomme of St. Amant lost his first match. Prudhomme defeated Schexnaydre in a consolation. Turner also won a consolation match.

In 140, East Ascension’s Michael Bernard won in the opening round. He also won a consolation round.

In 135, Zach Roy of East Ascension, Rodney Morris of St. Amant and Austin Gravelle of Dutchtown won in the first round. Gravelle won three straight. He also won twice in the consolation rounds, making it to the round that decided fifth place. Roy and Morris each won once in the consolation rounds.

In 130, Matt Hamilton of Dutchtown advanced with two wins before falling to eventual winner David Mahoney. George Bollinger of East Ascension and Logan Comeaux of St. Amant stumbled in the first round. Bollinger won once in the consolation rounds, as did Hamilton.

In 125, Manual Luna of East Ascension lost his first match, while Kade Siears of St. Amant won his first. Luna and Siears each won once in the consolations.

In 119, Dyllan Salsman of East Ascension and Jacob Averett of St. Amant fell in the opening round. Salsman won once in the consolations. Ira Curtis of Dutchtown won his first two matches.He won twice in the consolations, advancing to the fifth place round.

In 112, Derrian Paxton of St. Amant and Jack Egloff of Dutchtown won in the opening round, while Matthew Ashford of East Ascension lost. Ashford went on to top Paxton in the consolations.

In 103, East Ascension’s Alex Betterldge and Dutchtown’s Austin Blades both won in the opening round. Blades won once in the consolations, which was a victory over Betterldge.
