LHSAA Division I, III State Soccer Championship returns to New Orleans Feb. 25-26
NEW?ORLEANS?– The 2011 Louisiana High School Athletic Association/State Farm Division I and III State Soccer Championships are returning to their birthplace as City Park’s Tad Gormley Stadium will be the host site for this year’s title chase, Feb. 25-26.
Tickets may be purchased the day of the event at Tad Gormley Stadium for $10. General admission doors will open at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
The Division III matches will be played on Friday, Feb. 25 with the girl’s contest beginning at 4 p.m. and the boys will follow at 7 p.m. The following day, Saturday, Feb. 26, the Division I championships will be up for grabs as the girls contest begins at 4 p.m. and the boys match will follow at 7 p.m.
The refurbished Tad Gormley stadium, which has drawn great crowds to the “Crown Jewel” of high school soccer in past years, will be the site for many of the local playoff contests due to the large number of highly seeded metro teams.
“I am extremely excited that the Division I and III Girls and Boys State Soccer Tournaments are being held in New Orleans,” said Rhonda McCullough, the LHSSA Tournament Director. “It has been a pleasure to work with Richard Smith, Tony Biagas, Mike Barnes and their committee in preparation for the tournament and I look forward to some exciting soccer being played over a two day period. The LHSAA encourages all soccer fans to make plans to attend the tournament and support our high school athletes in their quest for the coveted title of ‘State Champions.’”
Kenny Henderson, the Executive Director of the LHSAA, will be in attendance to honor the state’s all-academic teams at halftime.
Jefferson Parish President John Young and New Orleans’ Councilmember Susan Guidry will present trophies to the victorious teams. The four Most Outstanding Players will be chosen by Kenny Farrell and Dana Stumpf of the New Orleans’ Jesters professional soccer team.
The LHSAA has decided that all three soccer divisions will be included in the bid this summer for the 2012 and 2013 years. Four other Louisiana cities competed for the right to host this year’s state championship.
