Back to work

The reigning Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints dropped their first preseason game Thursday night as the New England Patriots took a 27-24 win.

The New Orleans backups failed to rally in the second half of the exhibition, played in Foxborough, Mass. New England jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first half.

After the Patriots took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, New Orleans scored its first points when running back Reggie Bush dashed wide left on a 2-yard touchdown run in the second.

Trying to make a name

Two players hoping to make the final roster stepped up and scored touchdowns for the Saints.

Running back Chris Ivory, a rookie from Tiffin, scored on a 2-yard run in the third. He finished with 30 yards on six carries.

The Saints are looking for a third running back to complement Bush and Pierre Thomas after Lynell Hamilton was lost for the season due to a torn ACL.

Second-year running back P.J. Hill, a Wisconsin product, carried nine times for 30 yards.

Larry Beavers, a first-year wide receiver out of Wesley, returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown in the third.

Morstead injured

Saints punter Thomas Morstead was injured on the opening drive of the game as he pushed Patriots returner Julian Edelman out of bounds.

Morstead missed the rest of the game.

X-rays were negative, head coach Sean Payton said.

Next up

In another preseason match-up, the Saints will host the Houston Texans Saturday, Aug. 21 in the Louisiana Superdome.
