Lambert serves as Red Stick Bowl honorary coach

BATON?ROUGE – Former East Ascension head coach Van Lambert served as the Black Knights honorary head coach in the eighth annual U.S.?Army Red Stick Bowl Saturday afternoon.

Lambert was an honor graduate from East Ascension in 1967, where he was a three sport letterman. He went on to become a four-year letterman at Northeast Louisiana University, now UL-Monroe, as a running back and was an Academic All-American.

Lambert joined the coaching staff at East Ascension in 1972 and served as head football coach and athletic director from 1981-1988.

The Spartans made the playoffs five out of eight season winning two district championships and sharing three more titles.

Lambert went on to become an assistant principal at Gonzales Middle before taking over as principal of St. Amant Middle for nine years. He retired with 30 years of service to the Ascension Parish School Board in 2004.

Lambert and his wife Kathy have four grown children: Lauren, Jake, Ann and Mark, all college graduates and two grandchildren, Lola and Eli Avery.
