Ascension Tennis Association wraps up USTA play

The Ascension Tennis Association promoted  Men's USTA 6.5 Combo league wrapped up league play Oct. 18. The league featured three teams with a total of 36 men, 12 on each team, that began play Aug. 9 and followed each Sunday after at the Gonzales Municipal?Park’s tennis courts.

The teams were called, "The Gators", "The Griffins" and "The Spartans."

The Gators won the league with a record of 6-2. The Spartans placed second with a 3-5 record. The Griffins also were 3-5, but finished third due to the league tiebreaker rules.

 "2009 was the first year the ATA (Ascension Tennis Association) had promoted a USTA men's 6.5 combo league,” said league coordinator Darren?Boone. “Due to the huge success of the league and the amount of fun that was had by all players involved, we do plan on making this league an annual event and hope to sign up more players in 2010. We are trying to do all we can to promote the sport of tennis in Ascension Parish.”

The Gators will advance to play in the USTA State tournament in Baton Rouge Nov. 13-15 at Lamar Tennis Center on the YMCA campus along Perkins Road.  They will face nine other league champions for the State Championship. The champion will get to travel to Mobile, Ala. in January 2010 to play in the USTA Southern Sectional tournament.

The Gators were captained by Ray White and Cy Morin.  The other 10 team members are Kenny Gautreau, Paul Poirrier, Daniel Heintze, Craig LeJune, Odas Orser, Louis Bordelon, Bob Sefchick, Mike Gautreau, Marcus Saucier and Mark Liggett.
