Ascension Cougars advance to tri-parish championships

RESERVE – Three Ascension Cougars football teams are competing Saturday in the Tri-Parish Youth Football League Super Bowl at Assumption High School stadium.

All four of the Ascension Cougars teams competed in the league’s playoffs Saturday at East St. John High School stadium.

The Cougars D team, made up of players ages 6 and younger, beat the Bayou Lafourche Raiders, 14-0. The Cougars had touchdown runs from Devon Haymond and Reggie Sims.

The D-Team will play the Lake Titans in the championship game for the second year in a row.

The Cougars C team will face the Bayou Lafourche Raiders thanks to a 20-14 win over the Cypress Grove Fighting Bobcats. The first score was a 62-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Van’shon Grayson.

On defense, Guy Harry picked up a fumble and ran 48 yards to set up Dontae Jackson’s 7-yard touchdown run later in the game.

The B team shut out the Vacherie Rams, 20-0. Justin Daniel put the Cougars on the scoreboard with a 67-yard touchdown.

In the third quarter, Koye Ruffin had a 64-yard touchdown run after an interception by Gregory “Lil G” Clayton. The Rams’ final drive was stopped by an interception by Deante Kennard.

The B-Team will play the Cypress Grove Fighting Bobcats in the Superbowl.

The Cougars’ A team, with players ages 12 and under, lost to the Bayou Lafourche Raiders, 8-6, who advanced to the Super Bowl.
