Lady Gators finish strong to sweep Central
ST. AMANT?– St. Amant scored eight of the final 10 points to rally past Central in the third game for the sweep 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 Tuesday night at the Gold Dome.
The Lady Gators (6-8) were led by Kayla Young with 15 kills and eight digs. Sami Marchand added 33 assists, seven digs, three aces and two kills, while Elena Villar provided eight kills, six digs and three assists.
“Even though we played well tonight, I don’t feel this is the best that we can play,” St. Amant head coach Allison Didier Leake said. “We are still learning. We are getting into district next week, so I want to be further than where we are. We are still adjusting to people in different positions in different places.”
“I just think we took control of what we could control, tonight. Peyton Vincent got to a lot of balls that usually get through and was more aggressive then she has been. We played a lot of younger players today and you couldn’t even tell.”
Central (15-9) was led by Casey Brown with 14 digs, 13 assists and three kills. Tremelia Kelly added 10 digs and four kills, while Rachel Barber provided 14 digs.
“We knew that they were going to be a strong team coming in and we just couldn’t control our passes,” Central head coach Heather Blanchard said. “They hit the ball very hard which is what we needed to see just before district.”
Central took an early lead in the third game before Villar’s ace knotted it up 3-3. St. Amant went ahead twice on Emma Key’s ace and Maddy Reardon’s kill before the Wildcats built at 15-11 lead on Dylan Wilson’s ace.
Key’s ace knotted it up 17-17 before Villar’s kill set up match point on Reardon’s kill.
The Lady Gators built a 14-7 lead in the second game before Central cut it to 17-14 on Taylor Padgett’s kill. Young’s kill put St. Amant ahead 22-15 before Villar’s kill set up game point.
St. Amant defeated Episcopal 25-12, 17-25, 15-7 at the Redsticker Classic Friday before falling to Cabrini 26-28, 9-25. The Lady Gators lost to host St. Joseph’s 14-25, 18-25 Saturday before falling to Chapelle 19-25, 17-25.
The Lady Gators open district play Tuesday when they host East St.?John after traveling to Assumption Saturday.
