USTA 2009 BMW?Combo Doubles Men League opens play

Ascension Parish’s United States Tennis Association’s 2009 BMW Combo Doubles Men League opened play recently at Gonzales Municipal Park.

Consisting of three teams named the Spartans, Gators, and Griffins, the league has a total of 36 players with 12 on each team.

“We are starting small but we are hoping to grow,” league coordinator Darren Boone said. “We named the team after the local school’s mascots to show local flavor.”

The champion of the league will play for the state championship in Baton Rouge with a chance to qualify nationally. The combo league’s teams were selected through a player draft and matches are held every Sunday at 3 p.m. Boone hopes to have two leagues in the spring.

The Gators defeated the Griffins 3-0 to open the season Aug. 9. Cy K.?Morin and Kenny Gautreau defeated Brad Dupont and Matt Joseph Gautreau, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Daniel Heintze and James Craig LeJeune defeated Darren?Boone and Cody Braud  6-4, 6-0 and Ray White and Odas Orse beat Fred Williams and Jared Gautreaux 6-3, 6-4.

The Spartans defeated the Gators 3-0 Aug 16. Mark David Benigno and Corey Mayers defeated Mark Liggett and Michael Gautreau 6-2, 6-2, while Garvin Bourgeois and Don Joseph Bourgeois bested Gaston Louis Bordelon and James Craig LeJeune 6-4, 6-2 and Sam M. Politz and Kenneth David Simoneaux beat Marcus Saucier and Paul Poirrier 6-4, 6-1.

The league will continue play through Oct. 25.
