Gonzales Lassie League begins, ends 2009 season on high note

Staff reports

The Gonzales Lassie League began the 2009 season on a very positive note.  The league for the first time had a family fun night at the park before the season was to begin.  This fun night and all the proceeds were donated to the Dreams Come True Foundation the next day at the opening ceremonies.

The league collected more than $1300 for this worthy cause.  The league also donated $250 to the St. Joseph Hospice Care in the name of Robin Ramirez who passed away in the off season.  The league would like to thank all businesses and volunteers who donated their time and goods.

The next day after opening ceremonies the league kicked off its season with the annual Pre-Season Tournament with all 31 teams participating in the weeklong event.

The regular season started at the beginning of May and ran through the middle of June.  This year the 18U age group played inter-league play with the teams from AYSA with teams from both leagues traveling to each other’s parks.  The season was high-lighted by the RCR Diamond Girls going 15-0 in a very tough 12U age group.  The 8U age group had for the first time Co-Champions with Eatel & Gator Financial topping an 8 team league.  The 10U age group crowned a new champion with the Gonzales Police Dept. going 11-1 and named league champs.  The 14U age group also crowned a new champion Oak Grove Exxon in a very competitive league.  The 18U age group ended in a tie with Special-T Dent and Memory Mania finishing the season with identical 12-3 records.  The Special-T Dent team won the play-off game against Memory Mania to end the regular season.

The Gonzales Lassie League All-Stars also had another excellent season sending 8 teams total to the PONY Regional Championship in St. Amant.  The 12U Thunder, 14U Thunder & 18U Thunder all won Regional Championships with the 10U Thunder, 12U Lightning & 16U Thunder all finishing in the runner up positions.  Then all 8 teams were off to participate in the PONY National Championships in Moss Bluff, LA.  All the Gonzales teams fared well at nationals.  The Gonzales Lassie League came home with the 12U Thunder and 16U Thunder both claiming National Championships.

The following teams all claimed national runner-ups 10U Thunder, 14U Thunder and 18U Thunder.  The Gonzales Lassie League would like to thank its sponsors, parents, coaches and players for the continuing support of our softball program.  The board of directors would like to thank all of our concession stand workers for all of their time and effort for doing a fine job.  The league would also like to thank the City of Gonzales and Mayor Barney Arceneaux for their support and Eatel for their sponsorship of this year’s banquets.
