Buquoi named MVP of LHSCA All-Star games
PINEVILLE — St. Amant’s Bridget Buquoi was voted the East’s MVP after the Louisiana High School Coaches Association’s All-Star Doubleheader Friday and Saturday at Louisiana College.
The West All-Stars won both games, 5-2, and, 4-0.
Buquoi, a soon-to-be preferred walk-on at LSU, registered six put-outs at second base and provided the most exciting defensive play of the doubleheader with a diving catch of a line-drive in Game 1.
“Like everybody else out here, she’s a tremendous talent,” East coach Blake Orgeron, of Lutcher High, said about Buquoi. “She’s a heads-up kind of player. She moves well. She’s always in the right spot. She’s got great instincts. What more can you say?”
Buquoi, like the rest of the East All-Stars, struggled at the plate but was a vacuum on defense.
“I didn’t hit well, but I think my defense was OK,” Buquoi said. “I just went out and did the best I could and did what I knew I could do. It was a lot of fun this weekend, not as much pressure as I’m used to.”
St. Amant teammate Emily Douglas also participated in the All-Star game.
West MVP Hannah Howell of Calvin pitched a combined seven innings in the doubleheader striking out 15, walking none and allowing no hits. Howell picked up the win in Game 1.
The East took an early 2-1 lead in Game 1 Friday before Howell entered in the fourth inning. The West added two runs in both the third and fourth for the victory. South Cameron’s Haley McCall was 2 for 2 with two runs.
Buquoi’s catch came off a hot shot from Byrd’s Kelsey Regan’s bat in Game 1.
“It was just reaction,” Buquoi said. “I just closed my eyes and went for it and woke up with the ball. It was a nice hit, though.”
The West put up single runs in the second and fifth innings and tagged on two in the third during Game 2 Saturday.
Regan was 1 for 2 with two RBIs.
