Spartans rally past ESJ in district finale

East Ascension fell behind, giving up three runs in the sixth but rallied for a 12-11 win to conclude District 6-5A play Thursday night at Johnny Ambeau Field despite eight errors.

“We won,” East Ascension head coach Wayne Grenfell said. “We could have shut it down and loss but we found a way to win. Hopefully it is something we can build on.”

The Spartans finish fourth in district standings with a 6-9 record missing out on an automatic playoff bid. They finish the regular season with a 12-19-1 overall record after falling to Thibodaux 4-2 Saturday.

Ethan Guidry got the win in one inning of relief. Alec Singletary pitched four 1/3 innings of relief giving up five runs on four hits while striking out six. Matt Richard gave up six runs on three hits lasting one 2/3 innings.

Adam Trahan’s double to the left wall scored Richard to open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. East St. John starter Ashton Lewis hit Ben Robinsion before walking Bradly Day and Tim Robinson to plate another run. Austin Todd’s groundout pushed across a run to give East Ascension a 3-0 lead.

Richard walked Shane Nicholson to open the second inning and Justin Howard grounded through the left infield. Josh Brown drew a walk and Richard hit two consecutive batters to plate runs.

Jared Klienpeter stabbed Renauldo Young’s liner at third to set up a double play as a run crossed before Andre Simmons’ double to left made it 5-3.  Howard grounded pass third to plate one more run after Richard hit Donald Goff. Singletary struckout Simmons to prevent further damage.

Levin Fairchild lined to left to open the bottom half and scored on Marcus Bailey’s line out after stealing second. Trahan scored on a pass ball to cut it to 6-5 after lining to center and stealing. Ben Robinson dropped a blooper into a Wildcat campfire before reliever Lionel Weston struckout Day to end the inning.

Tim Robinson drew a walk to open the bottom of the third and scored on Fairchild’s’ double inside the third base bag two outs later to knot it up 6-6.

Bailey beat out a grounder to third to open the bottom of the fourth inning and Trahan lined a double in front of the left fielder to plate a run. Ben Robinson’s sacrifice fly put East Ascension ahead 8-6.

Howard dropped a hit in front of center to open the fifth and pinch runner Jarris Johnson took third on a failed pickoff attempt before scoring on Courtney Sentimore’s groundout.

East St. John took the lead 10-8 in the sixth inning. LaBaron Sylvester grounded through the right infield before Jirus Moll and Young each reached on errors fielding bunts to cross a run and put runners in scoring position. Goff’s groundout crossed another run before a pass ball completed the damage.

Richard drew a walk to open the bottom half and Trahan reached on an error one out later before Ben Robinson lined to the right gap to cut it to 10-9. Brown took the hill and walked Tim Robinson to load the bases before Todd grounded through the left infield to plate two runs giving the Spartans the lead.

Brown grounded through the left infield in the seventh and Sylvester’s triple to the right gap knotted it up once again.

Bailey drew a one-out walk in the bottom half before scoring the winning run on Tim Robinson’s grounder to third after Trahan lined pass short.
