Griffins drop Destrehan for 6-5A title
DESTREHAN — In Dutchtown’s two regular-season victories over District 6-5A rival Destrehan, Southern Miss signee Dillon Day pitched two-hitters in twin 2-0 triumphs.
Day got to the Wildcats in other ways Saturday, as Dutchtown scored a 5-3 win in the 6-5A battle.
The victory snapped a tie atop the district standings, with each team finishing 13-2 in league play.
Day hit a three-run homer to spark the Griffins to a 5-0 lead entering Destrehan’s final at-bat. The Wildcats pulled within the final margin on Shane Babineaux’s three-run homer, but Day secured the win to get his first save.
Jesse Buratt, the winning pitcher, improved to 3-0. Hunter Tyree (5-3) took the loss.
Babineaux finished 2-for-3 with a double and scored three times. Day went 2-for-4.
With the Class 5A playoffs set to start, Dutchtown (27-5-2) now owns a 3-1 edge against Destrehan (21-12) in the season series.
The Wildcats forced Saturday’s tiebreaker with a 10-7 victory over the Griffins on Thursday.
Kurt McCune picked up the win while Chris Boutwell took the loss.
Troy Lewis was 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and a RBI for Dutchtown, while Alex Millet was 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs and Wesley Perkins was 1 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.
Patrick Roth was 4 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs for Destrehan, while McCune was 2 for 4 with a home run and Matt Smith was 2 for 4.
