ACHS pushes past South Cameron behind Grisaffe in 1A quarterfinals

Ascension’s Catholic’s Allison?Falcon tags out South Cameron’s Haley McCall at second base in the first inning of the Lady Bulldogs’ 2-1 Class 1A quartefinal playoff victory Friday evening at the LHSAA State Tournament in Sulphur.

SULPHUR?– Ascension Catholic scored single runs in the first and third innings and that was all the Lady Bulldogs’ needed as pitcher Ashlyn Grisaffe struckout 12 in a 2-1 Class 1A quarterfinal playoff victory at the LHSAA Top 56 Fast Pitch State Softball?Tournament at Frasch Park.

No. 6 seed Ascension Catholic (19-13-1) advanced to face defending state champion, second seeded Delcambre in the semifinals. No. 3 seed South Cameron ends the season with a 22-5 overall record.

South Cameron’s Haley McCall hit Nancy Guillot to open the contest. Guillot stole second, advanced on Anna Lassere’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a pass ball to put the Lady Bulldogs up 1-0.

“We’ve been against the best of the best,”?Ascension Catholic head coach Darrell Landry said. “Our kids are not intimated by any team out here.”

Grisaffe surrendered just three hits retiring 11 of the first 12 batters she faced. McCall grouneded pass short to open the bottom of the first inning but was caught stealing by catcher Guillot to shortstop Allison Falcon.

Bailey Landry reached on an error to open the second inning and advanced on a pass ball before being tagged out a home by catcher Becka Richard on Maggie Schexnayder’s grounder to short.

Allison Falcon lined a two-out double to the right gap in the third inning and scored on Annie Ourso’s double to the right corner to put Ascension Catholic ahead 2-0.

Grisaffe struckout the side in the bottom half and McCall retired 12 of the next 13 batters she faced.

Michelle Champion singled to right to open the bottom of the fifth but was left stranded.

Ourso singled in the sixth inning but McCall struckout Alayna Falcon and Landry to get out of the inning.

McCall doubled with one out in the bottom half and scored on Shelby Willis’ liner. The inning ended when Willis was tagged out by Guillot attempting to score an inside the park home run.

“I’m waving her home and whenever a baserunner stops to check the ball instead of trusting the coach, you cannot win a ball game,” South Cameron head coach Laura Reeves said.

Champion reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh but Grisaffe struckout both Richards and Amanda Wicke grounded out to Schexnayder at third to end the game.

Ourso was 3 for 3 with a RBI for Ascension Catholic, while Allison Falcon was 1 for 3 with a run. McCall was 2 for 3 with one run for the Lady Tarpons and Willis was 1 for 3 with one RBI.
