ST. AMANT - East Ascension pushed across the only run of the contest courtesy of an error in the fourth inning and held off St. Amant for a 1-0 District 6-5A victory Tuesday evening at Gator Park.

“Our guys work hard and their guys work hard,” East Ascension head coach Wayne Grenfell said. “We are just honored to come out with the win today. We both left a lot of people on base early. Fortunately,  we made some crucial pitches at crucial times to get us out of innings and we did enough offensively to score a run. We know when East Ascension and St. Amant hook up it is always going to be a close game.”

“You can never relax. You have six good teams in this district with very good coaches. If you take a day off, you are going to get beat. This is a tribute to our players that they come and work hard everyday to give us a chance to be successful. That is all we can ask.”

The victory pushed the Spartans (9-10-1, 2-1) into a second place tie with Dutchtown in district play. St. Amant (14-8, 0-3) now finds themselves in last place with two games remaining in the first of three rounds of district.

“We have not scored a run in three ball games and we are frustrated,” St. Amant head coach Bob Lemons said. “We had opportunities every inning to score early. We just need to find someone to step up in a situation and square the ball up one time.”

Austin Todd picked up the win giving up two hits and five walks while striking out six in four and 2/3 innings. Bradly Day got the save in two and 1/3 innings of relief surrendering two hits and one walk while striking out one. Dillon Morin took the loss surrendering six hits and five walks while striking out four in six and 2/3 innings.

Levin Fairchild beat out a grounder to short to open the fourth inning and took second on an errant throw to first on a pickoff attempt from behind the plate. Morin walked Jared Kleinpeter and Alec Singletary’s sacrifice bunt advanced runners before Todd grounded through the left infield to plate the only run.

“We brought the infield up half way and it gets through his legs,” Lemons said. “I don’t know if it was hit hard enough for him to have a play at the plate. They might have scored anyway but we made two errors in that inning and they scored a run.”

Troy Gautreau grounded out to end the inning after catcher Alex Russell caught Day’s bunt.

Todd struckout the side in the bottom half.

Austen Waguespack drew a walk to lead off the fifth inning but was thrown out at first on Adam Trahan’s pop up and Marcus Bailey was caught stealing after being hit to end the inning.

Morin drew a two-out walk in the bottom half, advanced on a pass ball and stole third as Lee Elisar drew a walk before Day forced Caleb Templet into a groundout to end the inning.

Kleinpeter was hit with one out in the sixth inning and Todd drew a walk an out later but pinch running Chris Sanchez was thrown out at home by left fielder Kahn Petite to Russell on Day’s liner to end the inning.

Day hit Petite with one out in the bottom half and Dylan Delaune lined to the right gap to put runners on the corners but Petite got caught in a run down on Tanner Sheets’ bunt and Russell grounded out.

Trahan lined a two-out double to the right gap in the seventh inning before Bailey drew a walk but reliever Dillon Savoy forced Fairchild into a groundout to end the inning.

Task Plauche drew a lead off walk in the bottom half but Morin grounded into a double play. Elisar grounded off third’s glove and stole second before Templet’s pop up ended the game.

Trahan led off the contest with a single and stole second and third before Kleinpeter flied out after Morin struckout Bailey and Fairchild.

Morin drew a lead off walk in the bottom half but pinch running Plauche was thrown out at second by catcher Trahan to shortstop Fairchild. Elisar lined to right and stole second an out later but Todd struckout Kenny Wilkins to end the inning.

Singletary walked to open the second inning but Russell threw him out attempting to steal second to shortstop Elisar. Todd lined pass first before Petite made a diving catch on Day’s liner and Gautreau grounded out.

Todd surrendered consecutive one-out walks to Delaune and Sheets in the bottom half but struckout Jacob Templet to end the inning.

Waguespack grounded through the center of the infield to open the third but Bailey grounded into a double play one out later.

Morin dropped a single to shallow left to open the bottom half before Plauche stole third after Elisar’s sacrifice bunt but Todd struckout Wilkins to end the inning.
