Lady Spartans pull away from St. Amant

East Ascension’s Alexis Ruth splits St. Amant’s Kaleigh Babin and Megan Poore in the fourth quarter of the Lady Spartans’ 60-29 victory Friday night.

East Ascension overcame a sluggish start to take a 60-29 victory over St. Amant Friday night earning a share of the District 6-5A crown.

The Lady?Spartans traveled to co-champion East St. John Monday in a extra playoff game to determine seedings.

“It will decide the first and second-place team in our district,”?East Ascension head coach Dennis Chandler said. “The first-place team gets a full power point. The second-place teams gets a half power point. Right now that could change both of our seedings.”

Kaneesha Gran led all scorers with 13 points for East Ascensiosn. Alexis Ruth added 12, while Symone Miller and Jalen York contributed 10, Katona Blanche added eight and Josie West scored six.

St. Amant stayed with the Lady Spartans knotting it up 10-10 in the first quarter courtesy of Jaci Bourgeois’ baseline jumper but Grant nailed a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining.

“We came out too emotional. You have to give St. Amant credit,”?Chandler said. “They did a good job of slowing the pace down and taking care of the ball. After we settled down, we got back into the game.”

Megan Poore led St. Amant with 10 points and Bria Turner added six.

East Ascension opened the second half on a 10-2 run. Turner’s drive cut it to 26-18 at halftime after Grant’s dish to York for a 3-pointer on the right wing following Poore’s consecutive baskets.

Blanche’s free throws opened the quarter before Grant pulled up in transition and fed Ruth inside.

East Ascension opened the second half on a 16-0 run as the Lady Spartans would nail eight free thows, while West fed Miller in tranisition, Ruth drove baseline and  Blanche converted a three-point play.

Turner’s dish to Lauren Langlois for a baseline jumper ended the run with 3:10 left in the quarter.?Langlois nailed a 3-pointer from the let wing to cut it to 44-23 but West and?Ruth’s free throws extended it going into the final stanza.

Grant and York’s jumpers opened the final stanza before Poore’s free throws. York’s 3-pointer from the right wing preceded a plethora of free throws down the stretch for the final tally.
