Eunice, Vaughn top local seeds at state meet
KENNER – St. Amant senior Zach Eunice and junior Tre` Vaughn headline the list of seeded Ascension Parish wrestlers at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament scheduled to begin today at the Ponchartrain Center.
Eunice, coming off his second consecutive Greater Baton Rouge City championship, is the No. 2 seed at 140 pounds behind St. Paul’s Chase Gourgues. Eunice placed second in the 140-pound class at state in 2007.
Vaughn, who placed fourth in 2007 at 130 pounds, is also the second seed in the 135 pound class behind Brother Martin’s Reed Hart.
Ascension Parish has a seeded wrestler in eight of the 14 weight classes in Division I, including two at 285 pounds.
Wrestling begins today at 9 a.m. with the first and second rounds of the championship brackets and the first round of the consolations. The second round of consolations is scheduled for 11 a.m. Session II, which includes the third round of championships and the third and fourth round of consolations, will be from 5-9 p.m.
Session III opens Saturday at 9 a.m. with the fifth round of consolations. Semifinal action begins at 10:30 a.m. The sixth round of consolations will be held from noon-2 p.m., followed by the consolation bracket championships at 2 p.m. The state championship matches will be held in Session IV, scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
Admission is $8 per person per session. An all-session pass will be sold during the first session only for $28. Gates open one hour prior to first match of each session.
Dutchtown’s B.J. Harvey, coming off his first city championship, is the third seed at 285 pounds after placing fourth in 2007. St. Amant’s Abbas Laymoun, the defending state champions at 285 pounds, is the fifth seed.
St. Amant’s Terry Palmisano is seeded fourth in the 152-pound class, while Dutchtown’s Austin Gravelle is the fifth seed at 125 pounds. Both made it to the championship final at the city meet.
Dutchtown’s Randy Thackery is the sixth seed at 215 pounds and St. Amant’s Nelson Jointer is also the No. 6 seed in the 189-pound weight class. St. Amant’s Alex LaValley is the ninth seed at 119 pounds.
Also competing at 103 pounds is East Ascension’s Austin Waguespack, who is coming off his first city championship. Dutchtown’s Dallas Chenevert will also compete in that class.
East Ascension’s Anthony Smith, another first-time city champion, will compete in the 135-pound weight class.
At 112-pounds, Dutchtown will send Ira Curtis, while EA’s Braydon Sonnier and St. Amant’s Chris Boyter will compete.
East Ascension’s James Rawls and Dutchtown’s Matt Hamilton will compete at 119 pounds, while St. Amant Chanse Kendrick and Dutchtown’s Taylor Harris are at 125.
EA’s Thomas Turner and St. Amant’s Gurjit Sandhu are scheduled for 130 pounds and East Ascension’s Bradly Day will compete at 145.
Dutchtown’s Ian McMillian will compete at 152 pounds, while East Ascension’s Zach Roy and St. Amant’s Andrew Allemond are scheduled for 160. Dutchtown’s Joey McCaffery, St. Amant’s Brett Howell and East Ascension’s Adam Alfred will compete at 171.
East Ascension will send Charles Billot at 189 pounds, while St. Amant’s Brennan Howell and EA’s Scott Bosworth will compete at 215. East Ascension’s Robert Gray is also competing at 215 pounds.
