Gators hold off EA for Jambalaya Cup
GEISMAR - St. Amant’s Abbas Laymoun lost a 2-0 decision to East Ascension’s Robert Gray in the final match of the Jambalaya Cup but did enough to ensure the Gators would win the dual and wrap up the championship Friday night at DTHS’ gym.
“Abbas Laymoun did the most selfless thing I have ever seen,” St. Amant coach Andy Chapman said. “He did what he had to do to not get pinned to win for his team.”
St. Amant defeated East Ascension 38-36 and Dutchtown 48-33. In the first dual, the Spartans defeated the Griffins 36-33.
East Ascension stormed out to a 27-0 lead against the Gators behind pins from Braden Sonnier, Austen Waguespack and Thomas Turner, a 23-19 decision by James Rawls over Alex LaValley and a forfiet win by Keith Forte.
St.?Amant then got forfeit wins from Tre` Vaughn, Zach Eunice and Terry Palmisano sandwiched around Brad Day’s decision over Gator Brian Hogan.
Andrew Allemand pinned EA’s Zach Roy to give St. Amant the lead but Adam Alfred won by forfiet before Nelson Jointer’s major decision over Spartan Charles Billot. Brennan Howell’s fall to EA’s Scott Bosworth set up the climactic finish.
Waguespack pinned Dutchtown’s Chris Smith to open the Cup before Dallas Chenevert won an 11-9 decision over Sonnier. Ira Curtis then pinned Forte before Rawls defeated Matt Hamilton.
Turner pinned Taylor Harris and Dutchtown’s Austin?Gravelle won a forfeit decision to cut it to 18-15 before Day and Roy’s forfeit wins. Joey McCaffery pinned Alfred before Billot’s forfiet win provided enough for the Spartans despite Zack Hill and B.J. Harvey’s wins over Bosworth and Gray.
Dutchtown jumped out to a 24-0 lead over St. Amant behind Chenevert, Curtis and Hamilton’s pins of Cole LeBlanc, Chris Boyter and LaValley and Harris’s forfiet win.
St. Amant then scored 36 straight points courtesy of Chanse Kendrick, Vaughn, Eunice, Brian Hogan, Palmisano and Allemand’s forfiet victories.
McCaffery defeated Bryson Daigle to cut to 36-30 before Jointer won a forfiet. Hill defeated Howell 7-4 and Harvey won a forfeit decision over Laymoun,
The Jambalaya Cup between East Ascension, St. Amant and Dutchtown was the final wrestling meet of the season before the Wrestling State Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Ponchartrain Center in Kenner.
