Lady Spartans hold off Hahnville
East Ascension limited Hahnville to four points in the second quarter and held on for 47-38 victory to remain undefeated in District 6-5A play Friday night at EAHS’ gym.
“Right now, I am pleased to a large degree,” East Ascension head coach Dennis Chandler said. “We are winning and you can’t argue with that. We can’t take a play off or relax.
“I wouldn’t say we were content (slowing the tempo down) but that is how it worked out. The biggest thing was they came out with some fire and made some adjustments in the second half. It got a little bit harder to get into our sets. If we make our free throws it is probably still a 15-point margin.”
East Ascension (14-3, 4-0) sits alone atop standing with one more game left in the first round of district play. The Lady Spartans travel to St. Amant Tuesday.
“East Ascension is a good ball club and they are going to be tough to beat,” Hahnville head coach Kevin Robicheaux said. We are young and experienced but I was happy with our effort. When you are playing from behind you waste a lot of energy.
“When you have a lead, you want to be patient with the basketball, make the defense come out and dictate the tempo and they did a great job of that taking time off the clock and making their free throws at the end. That is a good basketball team we just played. We tried our best to get back in but they did a great job of making it a shorter game.”
Symone Miller led East Ascension with 15 points. Alexis Ruth added 13, while Josie West provided 10 and Kaneesha Grant had seven.
Kaelynn Boyd led all scorers with 20 points for Hahnville (13-14, 1-3).
West scored six points in the first quarter and Ruth added five as East Ascension took a 16-8 lead going into the second quarter.
West’s hook shot in the lane was the first basket from the field in the second frame before Jasmine Hill fed Boyd inside. West’s putback then preceded Grant’s dish to Ruth for a 3-pointer in the left corner before Hill fed Jamara Celestan inside to cut it to 26-12 at half-time.
Miller opened the second half with a lay up in transition from Ruth and a jumper. Ruth’s putback made it 34-18 after Celestan’s inside bucket. Hill fed Boyd and Celestan inside during a 7-0 run Dashanee Sandolph nailed a 3-pointer from the left corner. Grant’s free throws made it 37-28 going into the final frame.
Hahnville cut it to 38-32 to open the fourth quarter courtesy of Hill’s lay up off a steal before East Ascension made 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal it.
