Gonzales sweeps Dutchtown to stay undefeated

GEISMAR - Gonzales Middle swept both boys and girls games over Dutchtown Wednesday night as both teams remained undefeated in Ascension Parish Middle School League play.

With the victories, the Bulldogs captured at least a share of the parish championship with three games remaining.

JaVaughn Williams scored a game-high 19 points for Gonzales (11-0) and Tyler Briley added 12. Jhong Miller led Dutchtown (8-3) with 10 points. St. Amant (8-3) is also still in contention after defeating Central Wednesday night.

On the girls’ side, Jemica Williams scored a game high 14 points for Gonzales (11-0)?and Shannon Carbin added seven. Jordan Logarbo led Dutchtown (4-7)?with seven points. Prairieville (8-3) remains in contention despite losing to Lake Wednesday night.

Gonzales 66, Dutchtown 31

Gonzales scored the first eight points capped by Chad Hill’s crosscourt pass to Williams before Miller’s pull up jumper and one put Dutchtown on the board.

Williams’ baseline jumper gave the Bulldogs a 14-4 lead but before Miller’s putback cut it to 18-10 going into the second quarter.

Dutchtown knotted it up 18-18 on Patrick Thompson’s dish to Corey McBride inside during a 10-0 run but Briley’s 3-pointer from the left started a 11-0 Gonzales run to close out the first half featuring Donald LeBlanc’s and Jarred Adams’ lay ups off steal and Williams’ putback to give Gonzales a 29-18 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 10-0 run kickstarted by Shiervon Ursin’s putback. McBride’s putback preceded LeBlanc’s 3-pointer before Thompson spun. The Bulldogs scored the last eight points of the quarter to go ahead 50-22.

Adams’ free throws gave Gonzales their biggest lead 65-27 in the fourth quarter.

Gonzales 42, Dutchtown 15

Gonzales took advantage of a 12-0 run in the second quarter capped by Williams’ lay up off a steal. Carbin’s drive in transition and one gave the Lady Bulldogs a 22-5 halftime lead.

Carbin’s jumper and Karley Perkins’ inside bucket opened the second half before Logarbo nailed a 3-pointer and 19-footer from the right corner  before Ja’mea Fernandez’s bank shot cut it to 26-11. Williams fed Tierrel Ross in transition to put Gonzales ahead 32-15 going into the final stanza after pulling up in the lane and going coast to coast.

Chaquea Caldwell’s putback reflected the final tally after buckets from Ross, Perkins and Williams as Gonzales held the Lady Eagle scoreless in the final frame.
