DTHS’ May enters state swim meet as top qualifier in two strokes

After two third place finishes last season, Dutchtown’s Spencer May goes into the Louisiana High Athletic Association State Swim Meet as the top qualifier in both the butterfly and breaststroke.

The preliminaries for the Division I meet are scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at the SPAR Aquatic Center in Sulphur. The top 16 finishers in the preliminaries will move on to the finals to be held at 5 that evening.

St. Amant has qualified five swimmers -  Lexi Stone, Lara Hutchinson, Bridget Champagne, DJ Ridgdell and Jake Bordelon along with its relays.

Dutchtown will also send its relays along with May, Charles Doofe, Taylor Gautreau and Blank McCall. Also qualifying from East Ascension is Hannah Core and one relay.

Dutchtown finished 17th in the girls competition and 20th in the boys’ at state in 2007. St. Amant’s girls placed 20th.

Dutchtown was seventh and St. Amant 10th in the boys competition at the Capital City Swim League Championships earlier this month. The Lady Gators came in 11th.

May will be one of the favorites in the 100-yard backstroke after breaking the CCSL Championships record winning the event and with a qualifying time of 52.42.  He also qualified in the 100 butterfly after winning at the CCSL meet with the top time of 51.76.

Stone leads the St. Amant girls after taking fourth in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 200 individual medley at the city meet. She enters with eighth best qualifying time in the medley at 2:24.54 and the 11th best time in the freestyle at 59.25. Stone finished 13th in IM at state last year.

Doofe qualified in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM, events he placed fifth and eighth in at city. He  enters with the 12th and 14th best qualifying times.

Gautreau leads Dutchtown’s girls after taking fifth in the 200 freestyle and 10th in the 100 backstroke at the city meet. She enters with the 22nd and 23rd best qualifying times, respectively. Gautreau finished 11th at state in the backstroke last season.

Champagne qualified in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle for state. She enters with the 19th and 23rd best qualifying times. Hutchinson qualified in the 100 breaststroke, an event she placed seventh in at the city meet, and the 50 freestyle. She enters with the 11th and 34th best qualifying times.

Ridgdell leads St. Amant’s boys contention after taking eight in the 100 breaststroke and 13th in the 200 IM at city. His qualifying times are 15 and 23rd, respectively. Bordelon will compete in the 100 freestyle. He was 21st at city and has the 37th best qualifying time.

Core qualifies in the 100 freestyle after finishing seventh at the city meet. Her qualifying time is 24th. McCall qualifies in the 50 freestyle after placing 13th at city. Her time is 29th best. Core
