Ascension Catholic uses quick start to thump Dutchtown

DONALDSONVILLE - Ascension Catholic used a quick start and held off Dutchtown to claim a 3-1 victory Tuesday night at ACHS’ gym.

The Lady Bulldogs won 25-16, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18.

“We tell them to push ahead,”?Ascension?Catholic head coach Al Olive said. “Alot of times when we get a lead they back down but not tonight. The mistakes they made today, they didn’t let it bother them. They cheered each other on and kept going. They really have come together.”

Dutchtown was led by Chelsea Magee with seven kills, while Haley Bain added 17 assists and Justine Tureau had 12 digs.

“We were evenly matched and it just came down to execution,” Dutchtown head coach Patrick Ricks said. They played really good defense and we couldn’t control the ball. Whenever we can’t control the ball, we don’t do well because we don’t have the kind of team that can make up for it with hitting.”

Both teams will advance to the playoffs next Monday. No. 8 seed Ascension Catholic hosts No. 9 seed Ridgewood Prep in Division V, while No. 31 seed Dutchtown travels to No. 2 seed Dominican in Division I. 

Ascension Catholic jumped out to a early 3-0 lead in the first game on Katherine Capone’s block of Magee and Chelsea Zeringue’s dink.

Haley Burns’ kill and consecutive aces put Dutchtown back in it before six aces by Zeringue prompted the Lady Bulldogs to a 10-0 run.

“The gym is so close and they have really loud fans,” Ricks said. They came out fired up. I told the girls if we came out and jumped on them, it would settle down but we weren’t able to do that.”

Kills from?Racheal Pickens and Brooke Bahlinger along with aces from Tureau cut it to 15-12 beffore Pearce’s three consecutive aces. Zeringue’s kill set up game point on Capone’s kill.

The second game went back and forth with 10 ties and 11 lead changes. Magee and Capone traded kills to open the contest before Tureau’s ace gave Dutchtown a 5-3 lead. Arlaina Ferchaud and Capone’s kills put Ascension Catholic ahead 8-7 before Pickens’ dink made it 13-11.

Ferchaud’s kill and Alisa Richard’s ace put cut it to 15-14 before Ashlyn Grisaffe’s dink knotted it up 17-17.

Pickens blocked Zeringue to give Dutchtown a 3-0 lead in the third game before Richard and Ferchaud’s kills cut it to 6-5. Bahlinger and Bain’s dinks put the Lady Griffins ahead 10-9 during a 7-0 Dutchtown run.

Capone’s dink cut it to 15-11 before Ferchaud and Pearce’s made it 20-16. Pearce’s attack error set up game point on Pickens’ kill.

Ascension Catholic never trailed in the third game going ahead 7-2 on kills from Ferchaud and Pearce. Bahlinger and Richard traded kills that made it 11-8 before Pickens’ knotted it up but Ascension Catholic responded on a 10-2 run courtesy of kills from Capone and Zeringue and aces from Grisaffe and Capone.
