Lewis, Griffins’ freshmen crush St. Amant, 34-0
ST. AMANT - Dutchtown jumped out to a 21-0 half-time lead and cruised to a 34-0 freshmen victory over St. Amant Wednesday evening at The Pit.
St. Amant forced the Griffins to punt on the opening possession of the game when Evan Maiocchi threw incomplete but on the first play of the ensuing possession Bryan Broussard recovered Andrew Allemond’s fumble at the Gator 36.
Troy Lewis carried three times for 33 yards before punching it in from the 1-yard line with 4:16 left in the first quarter. Tyler Guitreau blocked Terry Hughes’ kick to leave the score 6-0.
St. Amant drove pass midfield on the next series as Bryant Bourgeois kept to convert a third down but Allemond’s 5-yard gain was short after Nick Ossa hit Bourgeois for a loss.
Maiocchi capped the ensuing 9-play, 76-yard drive with a 1-yard quarterback sneak over the plane. Lewis’ 5-yard run converted a third down before Maiocchi connected with Jarred Hatfield for a 25-yard reception.
Kendell Lomas’ 17-yard run preceded Lewis’ 9 and 10-yard carries to set up the score, the later after offsetting unsportsmanlike penalties. Maiocchi hit Lewis on the conversion to give St. Amant a 14-0 lead with 3:18 left in the half.
Dutchtown forced St. Amant into a three-and-out and Maiocchi hit Chris White for an 8-yard pass before Lewis rumbled 9 yards. Davon Ester hauled hit Maiocchi’s tipped pass by Wendell Williams for a 29-yard catch after Isaiah Marcell’s 8-yard run and three plays later Lewis hit pay dirt from 3 yards. Hughes’ kick made it 21-0 with 11.6 seconds remaining in the half.
St. Amant was forced to punt on the opening possession of the second half and a bad snap to Cody Poirrier allowed Jacolby Bureau to scoop up the fumble and return it 5 yards for a touchdown. The kick gave Dutchtown a 28-0 lead with 5:50 left in the third quarter.
The Gators couldn’t gain a first down on the ensuing possession but Joshua Hymel recovered Lucas Shipman’s fumble at the St. Amant 48 after John Vallery hit Lewis for a 3-yard loss.
Aaron Davis dropped Kenny Matherne for an 8-yard loss on the next series and Poirrier was penalized for intentional grounding after another faulty snap giving the Griffins the ball at the St. Amant 30. Bureau’s 7-yard touchdown run capped the 4-play drive that saw Lewis scamper 22 yards on first down. Paul Gustave bobbled the snap on the conversion to leave the score 34-0 with 5:37 left to play.
Nicholas Manuel recovered Cody Ficklin’s fumble on the kickoff at the St. Amant 20 and the Griffins drove to the 5-yard line on White’s carries before Clarence Ruth dropped him for a loss and time expired.
